HCM CITY — A new dragonfly species, the Aethriamanta aethra, has been found in Viet Nam, the HCM City-based non-profit organisation Wildlife At Risk (WAR) announced yesterday.

In Vietnamese, the name of the dragonfly is Chuon chuon tram, according to a press release from WAR.

Previously, this dragonfly, which has no English name, has been found in other countries such as Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

The species was found while WAR was conducting a survey in the U Minh Thuong National Park in the southern province of Kien Giang.

Do Manh Cuong, a dragon-fly conservation specialist for IUCN in Viet Nam, and Bui Huu Manh, a biologist from WAR, found the species in March.

The species, found in the wetland habitat of the park, has different colours depending on its age and gender.

The discovery indicates that more dragon-fly species in the southern wetlands could be discovered.

WAR said that it would conduct further surveys on the distribution of this species in the southern wetlands, as well as a comprehensive survey on dragonfly species in U Minh Thuong National Park in an attempt to support conservationists' strategy for the dragonfly and wetland areas.
