ASEAN declaration on climate change to be adopted at ministerial meet

26 October 2015 | 09:50:00 AM

An ASEAN declaration on climate change is expected to be scrutinised and approved at the 13th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment (AMME 13) in Hanoi from October 26 to 31, said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE).

The declaration is also to prepare for the upcoming conference of the parties to the 2015 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the ministry noted.

The AMME is a triennial event organised on a rotational basis in each of the 10 ASEAN member countries.

Like the previous functions, this year’s event aims to review the implementation of the region’s agreements on environmental cooperation, discuss new scopes of collaboration and suggest solutions to enhance joint efforts in the field, especially for the post-2015 era after the ASEAN Community is formed.

The MoNRE said the AMME 13 will be attended by the environmental ministers of the ASEAN nations, Japan, China and the Republic of Korea; the ASEAN Secretariat; and the bloc’s partner organisations.

The AMME 13’s concurrent related meetings include the preparatory senior officials’ meeting, the 14th ASEAN +3 Ministerial Meeting on the Environment, a meeting on the realisation of the ASEAN Agreement on Trans-boundary Haze Pollution and a meeting of the parties to this treaty.

The related events are to review the outcomes of the implementation of programmes and projects in 10 environmental cooperation areas within the framework of ASEAN and ASEAN+3, the MoNRE added.
