Rare monkeys stray into Nghe An family gardens

14 November 2025 | 08:25:00 AM

Two women in Nghe An Province have handed over two rare wild monkeys to authorities after the animals unexpectedly wandered into their homes.

On November 13, Vi Thi Hoan, 62, and Nguyen Thi Hoa, 31, in Anh Son Commune, Nghe An Province, were surprised to find two wild monkeys inside their household compounds.

Recognising that the animals were protected wildlife, they quickly notified local authorities and the forest protection service for support.

Initial checks by the Anh Son forest protection unit identified the animals as a red-faced monkey and a stump-tailed monkey. Both are listed as endangered, rare forest species subject to strict protection in Vietnam.

Anh Son commune police and forest rangers went to the scene to inspect the area and ensure the safety of residents and animals.

Officials also used the incident to raise awareness among local people about the importance of conserving wildlife. Hoan and Hoa voluntarily handed the two monkeys over to specialist agencies.

On the afternoon of the same day, the pair were transferred to Pu Mat National Park for care and health checks before being released back into the wild. The handover took place safely under the supervision of forest rangers and conservation experts.
