Three foreign volunteers support VACNE to upgrade the English part of its website

Recently, the VACNE office welcomed three young Canadian volunteers, who will help to upgrade the English part of its website. The volunteers were sent here by the Centre for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development (MCD) to help VACNE increase the foreign readership of its website.

According to Mr. Le Quy Tue, who is in charge of the website, in previous years the number of people accessing the Vietnamese part of VACNE’s website www.vacne.org.vn has enormously increased. In the end of 2010, an American NGO (Alexa.com) has announced a statistic that ranks the VACNE website as 2,800,000th out of 100,000,000 websites worldwide. This relatively good ranking has promoted the VACNE website well among international readers, especially young ones, who express an interest in the website. However, the English part of the website is still weak. Not all contents on the Vietnamese side were reflected on the English side. Although access to the Vietnamese page was always 3000-5000 hits per day, access to the English page measured only 100 hits per day. Therefore, the support from Canadian volunteers: Ms. Susie Miller (ecotourism and gender), Ms. Caitlin Devlin (environmental education), and Ms. Daniel Castellino (environmental communications) in upgrading the VACNE website is very in need.

During a meeting at the VACNE office, it has been agreed upon that the time period between the 15th of Jan to the 30th of Mar 2011, the volunteers will search for information (in English) relevant to the contents of VACNE’s website on other Vietnamese and foreign websites. They will send this information to the VACNE office to enrich the English part of the website. As a very important part of the work, they will perform the English editing for news and articles that are written or translated by VACNE members and also contribute some of their own articles to the website.
During the meeting, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Sinh, President of VACNE, warmly welcomed the volunteers. He highly appreciated the active support of international collaborations, namely the support of the young Canadians to improve the VACNE website. He expressed hope that the VACNE website www.vacne.org.vn will become a useful and necessary information channel to all citizen groups, and receive great encouragements from domestic as well as international communities.
