Over 16,000 drivers fined for drink-driving in six days of Tet holiday

Traffic police fined more than 16,000 drivers for drink-driving violations during the six-day Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday, with a further 9,700 cases involving speeding offences.

The Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security said 271 road accidents were recorded nationwide between February 14 and 19, killing 168 people and injuring 177 others.


Compared with the same period in 2025, the number of accidents fell by 97 cases, or 26.36 per cent. Fatalities dropped by 35, down 17.24 per cent, while the number of injured declined by 93, a decrease of 34.44 per cent.

During the holiday period, traffic police inspected and handled more than 48,200 violations. Authorities temporarily impounded 482 cars and over 17,200 motorbikes, revoked more than 1,500 driving licences and deducted licence points in nearly 9,700 cases.

On February 19 alone, the third day of the Lunar New Year, 47 traffic accidents were reported nationwide, resulting in 35 deaths and 31 injuries.
