A cold front is set to bring heavy rain to northern Vietnam on March 4, with temperatures in some areas forecast to fall by 7-8 degrees Celsius to 15-18 degrees.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the cold air mass affected the entire north-central region and parts of the northwest and central regions on March 3.

The northeast, northern and north-central areas saw scattered rain and showers, with some places experiencing moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms. Temperatures dropped by 3-7 degrees. In the Gulf of Tonkin, strong north-easterly winds reached level 6, gusting to level 8.

On March 4, the cold front is expected to continue influencing other parts of the northwest and central regions, causing temperatures in some places to decline sharply by 7-8 degrees. Inland areas will see north-easterly winds of level 2-3, while coastal areas may experience level 3-4 winds.

Mountainous areas in the northeast are forecast to turn cold, while other northern provinces, including Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, will experience cold nights and mornings. The lowest temperatures in the north and Thanh Hoa are generally expected at 15-18 degrees, with some mountainous areas below 14 degrees.

In Hanoi, scattered rain is forecast, with cold nights and early mornings and lows of 16-18 degrees.

At sea, the Gulf of Tonkin will see strong north-easterly winds of level 6, gusting to level 7-8, with rough seas and waves of 2-3 metres.

The northern part of the North East Sea is expected to experience strong north-easterly winds of level 6, occasionally level 7, with gusts up to level 8-9, generating very rough seas and waves of 2-4 metres.

Forecasters warned that from Nghe An to Gia Lai, scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely, with some areas seeing moderate to heavy rain. Thunderstorms may bring whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong gusts capable of damaging homes, trees and transport infrastructure.
