Foreign visitors explore Mekong Delta canals on Tet

International visitors are hiring small wooden boats to weave through narrow canals in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, seeking a slower, more intimate glimpse of Lunar New Year traditions.

Instead of observing the bustling Cai Rang floating market from a distance, many are venturing deeper into the waterways, gliding along Rau Ram Canal in An Binh Ward, where nipa palms cast reflections on emerald water and the atmosphere of Tet in the orchards comes alive.

Along the banks, bright yellow apricot blossoms, kumquat trees heavy with fruit and red lanterns signal the festive season. The scent of freshly steamed banh tet mingles with incense, creating a space that feels both homely and reverent.

“I don’t feel like a tourist, but as if I’ve been invited into people’s real lives,” said a tourist from Germany. “Everything is natural and unforced.”

For Michael Thompson, a traveller from Britain, the experience has been the highlight of his trip to Vietnam. “Seeing how families prepare for Tet, cleaning their boats, arranging flowers in front of their homes, there’s a remarkable sense of calm,” he said.

Boat operators earn VND 300,000-500,000 (USD 11.4-19) per day over the holiday, making three to five trips along seven-kilometre canal routes. Guides outline the symbolism of apricot blossoms, banh tet and ancestral worship in southern Tet traditions.

The activity provides direct income for local residents while offering visitors a culturally grounded experience.

Can Tho has lined up cultural and artistic events for Tet, including New Year celebrations, don ca tai tu performances at Cai Rang floating market and regular shows at Ninh Kieu Wharf, sustaining the festive mood throughout the holiday period.

Tourism officials expect Tet 2026 arrivals to rise 10-15 per cent year-on-year. The city targets 12.3 million visitors in 2026, up more than 10 per cent from 2025, fuelled by demand for short breaks, family trips and culturally distinctive, accessible destinations.
