The tree, which was planted in Phu Hung Commune some 300 years ago, measures 14 metres in height, and casts shade over an area of 200 square metres.

Speaking at the ceremony, the general secretary of the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment said the heritage status had been awarded to mobilise community involvement in preserving biodiversity and to raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection.

So far, over 600 trees of 45 species in 35 cities and provinces across the country have been recognised as Vietnam Heritage Trees.
