National Times- Da Nang People’s Committee held on June 8 a ceremony to recognized 800 years old banyan in the Son Tra Natural Preservation Zone as the city’s first heritage tree of Vietnam.

The banyan has grown up to 22m high and 85cm in diameter and lived for 800 years. That is home to a population of brown-shanked languor, an Indochinese endemic primate in the locality.
The tree called Da Nui Cao played an important role in Vietnam history. In the early 19th century, kings of the Nguyen Dynasty built an observation point on the banyan’s branches. Over the two resistance wars, Da Nui Cao served as a shelter for the Vietnam’s soldiers.
Prof. Dang Huy Huynh, Chairman of the Vietnam Heritage Tree Council said that the heritage recognition will aid the conservation of the tree and promote the Da Nang’s cultural heritage value and raise people’s awareness about historic, natural values and responsibility to protect environment.
