On April 29, 2011, Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment (VACNE) organized the ceremony to recognize Vietnam Heritage Tree for “SA MU DAU” tree in Nghe An province.
Dear ….
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am pleasant to attend this solemn ceremony on behalf of VACNE’s the Central Standing Committee and present Certificate of Vietnam Heritage Tree Recognition for “Sa mu dau” (Cunninghamia konishii hayata) tree in the Pu Mat National Park, Nghe An Province.
As you know, it has been only a year since the event about the recognition of Vietnam Heritage Tree was initiated and launched by VACNE on March 18, 2010, but up to now the event has been responded by a lot of individuals and organizations across the country with nearly 300 trees registered in 20 provinces and cities. Initially, Heritage Tree Council has approved and recognized 92 trees that meet the demand for Vietnam Heritage Tree, including “Sa mu dau” tree in Pu Mat National Park, Nghe An province.
The event about honoring VACNE’s Heritage Tree has received enthusiastic response from the community, the active participation of local authorities and authorized sectors. This activity helps protect biodiversity for human being and meet the cultural needs and the community’s spirit. Especially, it is necessary to take a special care and protection of ancient trees in cultural and historical vestige areas of the locality and the country as well. On the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi on October 5th, 2010, Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment organized the ceremony to recognize the first heritage tree for 9 ancient “Muom” trees (Mangifera foetida) in Voi Phuc Temple, Thuy Khue (Hanoi). This event has received enthusiastic response from local people, officials and social organizations such as Cultural Heritage Association, Vietnam Union of Science and Technology in Hanoi. In addition, VACNE also receives the timely attendance and encouragement from Madam Tong Thi Phong, Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
“Sa mu dau” tree nominated by Pu Mat National Park was officially approved by Vietnam Heritage Tree’s Council and recognized as Heritage Tree by Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment.
This is the first ancient tree in the central Nghe An province to be honored as Vietnam Heritage Tree, and it is also one of the highest trees in Vietnam. “Sa mu dau” tree has a perimeter of 23.7 meters and a diameter of 5.5 meters.
This “Sa mu dau” tree grows on the upper Khe Bu River, Chau Khe commune, Con Cuong district, Nghe An province (0453300 – 2100600 coordinates).
Called May Pec by local ethnic Thai people, so far, the tree has been growing well, producing sparse conical-shaped canopy and straight trunk.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Selecting and recognizing this “Sa mu dau” tree as Vietnam Heritage Tree not only helps protect Vietnam’s precious, rare genes but also promotes tourism development in Nghe An province. Especially, thanks to the activity, the richness and diversity of Vietnam’s flora can be introduced, contributing to raising awareness of the community on natural respect and environmental protection.
Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment also expects that all individuals, organizations, especially delegates will continue to study and nominate trees that meet the Vietnam Heritage Tree criteria and send registration to VACNE. We also want to send a message to UNESCO’s representative, foreign delegates here that: the event about recognizing has a significant meaning in the protection of biodiversity in Vietnam in particular and in the world in general. Hopefully, you can make practical solutions to support the event.
I wish a good health to all delegates and a success of the ceremony to announce the Decision on recognizing biosphere reserve in the western Nghe An and recognize “Sa mu dau” tree as Heritage Tree.
