The central city of Quang Ngai has mulled over the construction of a rainwater collection system on Ly Son Island with a total investment of VND250 billion (USD10.6 million).

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ly Son is some 17 nautical miles from the mainland and has a population of 20,000 people. The locality is home to 300 hectares of farming land with the majority used for onion and garlic cultivation.

To ensure the water for irrigation, people have rushed to dig wells. The island currently has up to 2,000 wells, which has led to a serious decline in the groundwater level.

In summer, most wells become dry, while the modest groundwater has been contaminated with salt and not suitable for household use.

The irrigation water mainly depends on a reservoir on the top of Thoi Loi Volcano which has a capacity of roughly 271,000 cubic metres. It is only enough for some 120 hectares of agricultural land.

Vo Quoc Hung, deputy director of the Quang Ngai Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province’s annual rainwater is estimated at nearly 9 million cubic metres. Except for the amount of water absorbed into the ground and evaporated, there will still be approximately 3 million cubic metres that flow into the sea.

It is necessary for the province to consider building a rainwater collection system to be held in tanks. This is a feasible and less expensive option than constructing a desalination plant, Hung said.
