Hospital fined for burying medical waste

Police in Tay Ninh Province has fined a local private hospital VND1.4 billion (USD67,000) for burying tonnes of medical waste in the area.

The waste contain medical equipment and placenta

Tay Ninh Province People's Committee announced the fine for the Le Ngoc Tung Hospital on September 3. They also asked the hospital to pay all the fees for lab tests and proper waste treatment. The cart used to carry the waste to the dump was also seized.

According to the provincial authorities, the dumping had been planned carefully with co-operation involving everyone from hospital directors to managers and employees.

On June 25, police from the Environmental Crime Division worked with local officers Tay Ninh police in a raid which caught two guards from Le Ngoc Tung Hospital red-handed as they buried three bags of medical waste. The bags included various things from syringes to placenta.

The guards said they received orders from the manager of the guard team to bury the bags at an abandoned site in Thanh Binh Hamlet and by a canal in Ward 2. On June 29, the police continued to find over 40 sites used to dump medical waste from Le Ngoc Tung Hospital. It is estimated that the hospital dumped around 63 tonnes of medical waste.

Le Ngoc Tung Hospital only entered operation in September last year with 35 beds.
