Vietnam is set to break ground on a high-speed railway linking Hanoi and Quang Ninh on April 12, marking a major step in regional transport development.

The 120km line, designed for speeds of up to 350km/h, will begin construction at Ha Long Xanh Station in Quang Ninh Province, according to project plans.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at the station site spanning Tuan Chau Ward in Quang Ninh and Viet Hung Ward in Hanoi.

The railway is considered a key inter-regional infrastructure project with strategic importance for the socio-economic development of Quang Ninh and neighbouring localities.

It will be developed under a public–private partnership model, with total investment estimated at VND 147 trillion (about USD 5.8 billion). Of this, more than VND 10 trillion (about USD 395 million) will be funded by the state budget for land clearance and compensation.

The double-track, standard-gauge line of 1,435mm will be fully electrified and run through four localities: Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Haiphong and Quang Ninh.

The route will start at Co Loa station in Hanoi and end near Tuan Chau public park in Quang Ninh. Five stations are planned along the line, including Co Loa, Gia Binh, Ninh Xa, Yen Tu and Ha Long Xanh, along with a depot at Ha Long Xanh.

The project is scheduled for completion and operation by 2028.
