A dumping ground in Hanoi’s outlying district of Soc Son which was blocked by local residents protesting against low compensation has been reopened following a meeting with municipal authorities.

On July 13, people in the two communes of Nam Son and Hong Ky started gathering to block trucks from coming into the waste treatment complex at Nam Son landfill.

As a result, a large amount of litter was left on Hanoi’s streets.

This morning, July 17, vice party secretary of Hanoi Dao Duc Toan came to Soc Son for a dialogue with the affected people.

At the event, the residents expressed their opposition to what they regarded as too low compensation and urged the city to speed up resettlement.

After the gathering ended, people removed tents on the roads leading to the dumping site. At 1 pm, the landfill was opened again to receive rubbish trucks.

By late afternoon of Thursday, the four inner-districts of Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Hai Ba Trung and Dong Da saw 10,000 tonnes of waste pile up and this morning, around 6,000 tonnes of this were transported to Xuan Son dumping ground in Ba Vi District for being treated.

Nguyen Duc Chung, chairman of the Hanoi’s People Committee said that authorities understood the difficulties facing the residents who live near Nam Son dumping ground. The city will consider the best solutions to the problem. However, the settlement process needs time, particularly legal-related procedures.
