Getting started with “green business”

9/19/2011 9:55:00 AM

What are the concepts of “green economy”, “clean production”, and “sustainable development”? What is the role of the youth in environmental protection activities, which contribute to the promotion of the development of a green and clean economy? These are two issues being enthusiastically discussed at the forum “The youth get started with green business” held by Vietnam National Youth Federation (VNYF).

Dr. Nguyen Manh Cuong, VNYF’s Vice Chairman said environmental pollution and climate change is strongly affecting the human living environment. Without timely regulations we would be burdened by growing unsustainable ecological debt which our future generations will have to pay off. Nevertheless, businesses, institutions, and mass organizations don’t pay real attention in creating a habit of using environmentally friendly production procedures and clean energy in their working process and production. Therefore, promoting communications and raising awareness on environmental protection by small individual actions as well as joint activities on a large strategic scale of an institution, a country, or worldwide are greatly needed.

At the forum “The youth get started with green business”, students and other young people openly exchanged their knowledge about the concept of a clean “green economy”, which is based on a harmonious combination of traditional economy and environmental and ecological protection. The goals of the “green economy” are environment protection, development of clean technology, and energy to ensure sustainable economic growth. Recently, many students and young people have become very self-motivated and enthusiastic, and have initiated many project proposals towards the “green economy”. However, due to lack of financial resources, policies and relevant mechanisms, there have been many problems in their development and implementation.
Statistics shows that at present there are more than 30,000 youth clubs for environment protection all over the country but their activities are limited to few well-known campaigns; many green initiatives remain only in print due to lack of finance, implementing sites, experts assistance, etc. Therefore, many participants including students, young people, and experts have raised the need of establishing a “Youth club for getting started with green business” under VNYF in order to help enthusiastic and qualified young people prepare for the world of business. Those who participate in the youth club will not only be able to share experiences and initiatives with each other but also to cooperate in development of green projects.
Mr. Duong Anh Tuyen (Initiative Fund Ambassador cum Secretary General of Vietnam Organization for Development of Rural Human Sources) said that in Vietnam there are more than 500,000 middle and small scale enterprises, in addition to a large number of craft villages. Among those in Hanoi, there are more than 2,000 craft villages that are still causing pollution. Therefore, students and youth in general should pay  special attention to projects and put forward initiatives that help  deal with the problem of pollution by craft production in some northern provinces. The youth should also think of the development of clean, renewable energy such as sun, wind, subterranean, and biogas energy. Organizations that Mr. Duong Anh Tuyen represents are willing to give consultancy, financial and knowledge support to the development of green enterprises.
