In response to World Environment Day (June 5), International Day for Biological Diversity and World Wetlands Day, a scientific workshop on biodiversity conservation and wetlands took place in Bac Kan with the participation of provincial leaders, the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment, the Central Committee of Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature & Environment.

This activity was held by Department of Biodiversity Conservation under Environment Administration in collaboration with Vietnam Environmental Protection Fund, World Nature Conservation Organization and Bac Kan Province.
During his opening speech, Mr. Bui Cach Tuyen, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources & Environment, Member of the Standing Committee of Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment, highlighted the importance and great economic benefits of forests and biodiversity, and simultaneously he also warned about biodiversity loss in our country.
After listening to an overview of Biodiversity Decade, the situation of implementation of the Convention on Biodiversity in Vietnam and the Ramsar Guildlines on Vietnam’s wetland management, etc. many scientists have made contributive ideas, especially warnings about management, protection of wetlands, biodiversity in national parks and biosphere reserves. They also added that Ba Be Lake recognized as a Ramsar site is good news, but it is very essential to maintain biodiversity and protect endangered species despite many difficulties.
Recognizing this, over the last time, Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature & Environment has made great efforts in the activities that are involved in protecting biodiversity and forests. Specifically, it has organized an annual workshop on biodiversity conservation in Truong Son Mountain Range in coordination with Vietnam Environment Administration and authorized agencies since 2008, and it has composed and published many documents basing on scientists’ findings at workshops. Besides, it has held Vietnam Heritage Tree Event with the aim to protect precious genetic sources; gradually arouse ancient tree protection and raise public awareness on environmental protection.
